Do Gooder Challenge for November
Simplicity and Gratitude are this month's themes. What can you do to simplify your life this month? What are you grateful for? The challenge this month is to write down one (or more if you are so inspired) idea and then put your idea into ACTION!
Good Things for November!
Sorry, Do Gooders - I've been offline for awhile. A move across the country will do that to a gal!
Anyway, here are some good things for November that I'd like to share!
1. My friend, Francie Cork passed this site along to me: http://darynkagan.com/index.html
Thanks, Francie! Sorry it took me so long to get the news out :-)
2. Along the same lines, http://www.happynews.com
3. If you or a loved one have food allergies and you struggle with meal planning (I have Celiac's Disease, so this site has been a godsend to me!): http://www.heartofcooking.com

July Do Gooder Challenge
Oh my goodness! In getting my house on the market and all the other craziness in my life, I completely missed the start of July for our Do Gooder Challenge this month. For July, I want to focus the Challenge on technology. Or, more about how we need to intentionally back away from technology a bit and get back to the value of face to face interactions.
Specifically, we'll start with cell phones (if you don't have one, stick with me, I'll have a little somethin' for you to at the end)....Here is your Challenge: Try to cultivate more considerate cell-phone habits this month, whether it be to not answer the phone or text while driving (which, more often than not, is gaining status of ILLEGAL in a lot of states!), set the ringer to vibrate while you are at the movies, get off the phone when you are at the cash register at the grocery store and actually talk with the clerk. There are more great tips at www.wisegeek.com/what-is-cell-phone-etiquette.htm to challenge yourself with.
If you don't have a cell phone, you are reading this message, so you at least have a computer. Set the intention of NOT turning the computer (or video gaming system, etc.) ON AT ALL by picking one day or one whole weekend and devoting that time to reconnect to LIVE people. See how many times in that day that you think about the computer, your email, facebook, etc. Besides reconnecting with friends and family, you'll save some electricity and help the environment :-) It's win-win.
As usual, post your comments and experiences for all of us to share!

June Do Gooder Challenge
With summer in full swing, this month's challenge focuses on Mother Earth and is a 2 part challenge.
We eat and drink every day, taking from Mother Earth...water, greens, fruit, vegetables, etc. Even if you open the freezer and take out a Lean Cuisine, take off the plastic, and throw it in the microwave...at some point before all the man processed stuff, there was Earth in there in the beginning. A lot of us eat most of our meals without really tasting the actual food or being grateful for it.
The Challenge this month is to create and savor at least one completely organic meal. Some of you may do this already a lot, and if so, this will be especially easy for you! But, for the rest of us...if you are growing your own vegetables in the back yard, this is a great place to start. If you don't cook, think salad, lol. If not, focus your ingredients on the organic section of the grocery store. Nothing processed or chemically altered/sprayed. If you need meat, try for free range, catch of the day, etc. Prepare your meal simple and fresh - don't mask it with butter and salt or sugar. Try fresh herbs like basil, cilantro, chives. When you sit down to eat, focus in on the flavors.
Part 2 of the challenge is to *with intention* give something back to Mother Earth. Whether it be planting a tree, watering, composting, throwing one of those fish you caught back in the water, etc. Give thanks and think a little bit about just how much the Earth nurtures us in our daily lives.
As usual, post any great recipes, ideas for challenges, or your thoughts about this month's challenge! Look forward to hearing about your experience!

May Do Gooder Challenge
With the arrival of warm weather, this month's Do Gooder Challenge is focused on getting outside! Commit to either participating in a walk for an organization in your community (whether the walk takes place this month or later in the year...at the very least set the intention now to participate), or participate in a community clean up day or planting day (not just your own garden, that's cheating, lol). As usual, post your experiences (especially if it's something you've never done before!) and feedback! I look forward to hearing from you!!!!

You have to register with them, but then you get an e-mail every sunday with sites where you can get free stuff. Sometimes it's not worth it to sign up or further commitments but some are okay. I usually get samples from WalMart. It's fun to go get the mail and get a prize inside every week or so!"

April Do Gooder Challenge
The Do Gooder Challenge for April is going to cost exactly $2. With tough economic times, I want to try to keep the challenges free or as low financial cost as possible - they are mostly meant as an exercise to evaluate yourself and to Do Good!
There are two parts to this challenge:
Part 1: The first part of this challenge is created more with myself in mind. If I carry cash, I spend it. So, the challenge is to put $1 in your purse or wallet. Do not spend this $1 for the entire month. Check to see how many times in the month you are tempted to spend that $1. Evaluate your reasons or what it was you were going to spend that $1 on.
Part 2: Take the second $1 and donate it to something/someone/some purpose you wouldn't normally donate to. Most of us are probably already financially helping where we can, be it through our church or favorite charity. Think outside the box this month and give that $1 to a different cause. Perhaps the clerk at the grocery store asks you to donate $1 to a particular cause the store is supporting, perhaps you buy a coloring page at a restaurant (like Chili's for St. Jude's), perhaps you give it to a homeless person on the street, you might buy a candy bar for a school fundraiser. Whatever the case may be, set the intention of purposefully giving that $1 away to a place that you wouldn't expect yourself to send it.
As usual, please post if you have an interesting story to tell about your challenge for this month, or to suggest future challenges! Have fun!

All Good Things - March 2008
Here's the good news/items that have been posted on the Facebook group page for March (in no particular order):
1. If you go to eatbetteramerica.com, they have a free coupon book they will send you with $10 in coupons and some really yummy healthy recipes in it.
2. I also enjoy www.shopforfreebies.com - they will send you an email each day with a link to list of free things. A lot of these are samples. I started with this about 6 weeks ago, and now it's a treat going to the mailbox each day because there's been lots of fun stuff sent to me!!! I'm thinking of collecting the beauty product samples and donating them to the local women's shelter. If you don't like providing your information or signing up for email newsletters, be selective about the freebies you choose.
3. Check out www.thebreastcancersite.com. You can click once per day to help pay for mammograms for those that can't afford it. It's free to click. There are also several other sites/causes as part of the site that you can click to help out with too literacy, hunger, animal cruelty, rainforest, etc. Takes 2 seconds! Get to clickin'!!!!
4. If you are looking to recycle old/dead electronics - computers to phones and all in between try www.myboneyard.com - I know they offer free shipping, and they might even give you a few pennies for your equipment :-). If you are planning on getting rid of a cell phone, cellphonesforsoldiers.com is great. Usually, whenever I order anything from Amazon an envelope is included from cell phones for soldiers. Eas-y peas-y....
5. This one comes from my friend Francie Cork:"I'm working on something right now and when I find out more details, I'll definately do everything in my power to drag you and anybody else with breath into it with me. I like your idea. A "community of women" can be a powerful tool. There are all SORTS of "peace and justice" efforts available to us locally and globally. One I've been tempted to act on is www.kiva.org which for a measly $25 you can help provide a woman seed money to help her get started in her business. "
6. Chris Pahssen-Noble writes, www.kibble.com Free dogs. Remember to feed cats also.
7. Quote for today:We have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak."--Epictetus, Greek philosopher
8. I thought this was a great list of good deeds that kids came up with!http://www.kidsturncentral.com/topics/issues/gooddeeds2.htm
9. Check to see if your grocery store offers reusable tote bags. They are great #1 for the environment, but #2 some of the stores will take money OFF of your final bill for each bag you use. Fred Meyer in Alaska does this (they also have a wine tote bag/carrier that holds 6 bottles, which is really cool that will have many uses in my house...plus an additional 10% off for buying in bulk. The quantity of groceries each bag holds is amazing...way more than paper or plastic. I keep mine in the car too so that I remember to use them.
10. www.tasteofhome.com/healthybudgetrecipes - for healthy recipes that are easy on your wallet.
11. Is anyone interested in participating in a book swap? If you are interested, let me know and I'll send you some reading! If you've never had a book exchange party at your house, it's pretty fun. Just ask everyone to bring their old books or magazines that they don't want anymore and a book bag to tote all their "new" books home in. I usually just use a kitchen table or counter to lay the books out on and make a few munchies. Afterwards, if any books are left over, donate them to your local literacy council, library, or bookstore. A good deed and great reading! If you are in Fairbanks/North Pole area, I wll probably host a book exchange at my house late April - I haven't had one in a LONG time!!!
12. This comes from LeAnne Hedrick, "And I would like to recommend a book to the group. Life's Greatest Lessons - 20 Things That Matter by Hal Urban. It's a great book to keep in focus the things that really matter in life. Good to focus on during these times."
13. On April 8th: Fight heart disease with the American Heart Association. Lace up your sneakers and take a walk on National Start! Walking Day.
14. Fairbanks & North Pole - Mark your calendars for May: Domestic Violence Awareness Month evolved from the first Day of Unity observed in October, 1981 by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The intent was to connect battered women’s advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and their children. Since that time, campuses and communities have held rallys, marches and educational seminars. These activities are as varied and diverse as the program sponsors but have common themes: mourning those who have died because of domestic violence, celebrating those who have survived, and connecting those who work to end violence. We now know that domestic violence is no respecter of race, creed, religion, gender, educational background or financial means. It is pervasive and is growing out of control. This year Interior Alaska Center for Non-Violent Living will be marching in Fairbanks, on Friday, May 1 at 7PM. For the first time, North Pole area residents will be walking on that same date! We hope to provide more details as the event gets closer!
15. A tip from Kitina Donders Braithwaite: I got 3/4 of my laundry done today!!! Hey, when there are seven in the house (including four adults, most of whom wear BIG clothes but shall remain nameless!) we make two to three loads per day so this is a big accomplishment! Can you tell I need some excitement in my life when this is my good news?I do actually have a tip for laundry too that has worked well for us. We recently got a metal framed organizer with hanging mesh bags for sorting. This was kind of a custom setup from an organizing shop--you could pick the colors of the bags. Since there are five girls in our family we should have had a pink bag, but had to settle for red. :0) Then we have one for darks (a black bag) and lights (white bag). The only thing I regret is that we don't have room for a fourth bag for the blues and greens so we would have a place for jeans and shirts. We have put our old green hamper back into service for this purpose! It makes laundry more fun for my little girls, and maybe even for me!

3.Things that you are doing at home, as a volunteer or at work to help the economy or the planet
4.Upcoming events that you’ve heard about or a cause you’d like to put out there
5.Perhaps you have a talent you can contribute to the group
